FLF:Food Insecurity, Intrahousehold Dynamics, and Lifecourse Outcomes in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Food Security for Equitable Futures is a UKRI funded Future Leaders Fellowship which aims to provide robust evidence on food insecurity in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam.

Our Approach:
Research on high-income countries shows the adverse consequences of food insecurity on child and adolescent development, including risky health behaviours, distress, feelings of shame, poor educational outcomes, and unhealthy diets. However, less well-investigated are the consequences of household FI in the Global South, particularly with respect to child and adolescent development and long-term well-being. Our work will fill these gaps in the literature by achieving the following aims:

- Explore how food insecurity in childhood and adolescence are associated with well-being over time, and which population groups are most at-risk
- Investigate whether or how households can effectively mitigate the negative effects of food insecurity
- Examine the extent to which food insecurity impacts some household members more than others
- Study how food insecurity can be best-measured in order to understand intrahousehold dynamics
