Description
By using archival documents and oral testimonies, this paper reconstructs the Nairobi Film Forum, an international film exhibition that took place from 10 to 19 July 1985 in occasion of the United Nations Third World Conference for the Decade for Women (1976-1985). Consisting of a selection of over 200 films, the event included screenings, roundtables and workshops, where an international group of film practitioners and media organizations discussed issues of production, distribution and exhibition. By concentrating on the programme and the protests against the interruption of a screening of Leila and the Wolves (Heiny Srour, 1984) by the Kenyan authorities, the paper focuses on the networks of solidarity that made this event possible, and how they challenged the unequal “structures and geographies of opportunity” affecting women and feminist filmmaking at the time. By looking at these questions through the lenses of anachronism, the paper connects this micro-history with the return of intersectional and internationalist approaches in today’s feminist screen studies, highlighting the potential benefits of a broader integration of the history of feminist film exhibition in the field.| Period | 28/06/2025 |
