Description:
The Lancaster School of Architecture organised an enriching field trip to Athens, Greece, for students enrolled in the module ARCH202: Architectural Design Studio 2B, titled "The Future of Dwelling." Scheduled from 17th to 22nd January 2023, this field trip aimed to provide students with insights into historical and contemporary architecture, as well as inspiration for their project work on urban dwelling concepts within Exarchia, Athens.
The itinerary was carefully designed to accommodate a mix of exploration, cultural engagement, and academic enrichment. Key events included site visits to significant locations, such as the Acropolis, the Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, and the historic triangle of Athens, featuring iconic areas like Monastiraki and Kerameikos. Students were encouraged to carry sketchbooks and drawing materials to capture the architectural essence of Athens and enrich their urban and spatial analyses.
The trip also included a detailed itinerary with emergency contact information, ensuring students' safety and providing logistical details, such as transportation directions from Athens Airport to the city centre and strategic meeting points for group activities.
By interacting with the diverse Athenian urban fabric, students were able to better understand the historical context and current dynamics of urban living, which are pivotal for their coursework. This field trip facilitated an immersive learning experience that bridged theoretical knowledge with real-world observation, equipping students with a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in contemporary architectural design.
